Stupid simple apps are dying out. The new hot hot is gaming on facebook. Everyone gets that gaming has a higher level of engagement than normal apps. What people, who are not game designers, may not understand yet is that most of the casual games being developed have an endpoint. This is the point where you finish the game, get bored, or get burned out. So, even a successful game will not only reach saturation of their user market, but will eventually see saturation and decline of engagement over time.

The only kind of application that has long lasting, multi-year stickiness are communities and social networks. So here’s my secret revelation to you. After the gaming wave runs its course people will actually realize the next wave is in MMOs on facebook. An MMO is the perfect marriage of getting high engagement through games and a chance at building a sub-community of users on a social network.
